The Ciyakang Tribe, known as the Zhiya Gan Tribe in Mandarin, is located in Xilin Village, Wanrong Township, Hualien County. It is primarily a Taroko tribe. There are two theories regarding the origin of the tribe’s name: one is that the terrain here resembles a deep kettle, hence the name Ciyakang (meaning kettle-shaped terrain); the other is that the family who developed this tribe was named “CyangUkan,” thus the place was called Cyakang.
The tribe consists of 451 households with a total population of 1,350 people. Among them, 1,307 are indigenous, accounting for 97% of the total population, and 43 are non-indigenous, making up 3%. The breakdown of the indigenous population is 88% Taroko, 2% Amis, 2% Atayal, and 4% others.
Zhiya Gan Tribe is located between Zhiya Gan Creek and Qingchang Creek, on the right bank of the lower reaches of Shoufeng Creek, adjacent to Linrong Village, Fenglin Township, to the east. The area includes Xilin Elementary School, Xilin Police Station of the Fenglin Branch, Xilin Church, Qingxi Church, and the Zhiya Gan Water Purification Plant of the Taiwan Water Corporation’s Ninth District.
The geographical environment is an alluvial fan. This information is partly sourced from the Taiwan Indigenous Peoples Information Resource Network and partly from the 2018 publication “Encyclopedia of Indigenous Tribes in Taiwan” by the Council of Indigenous Peoples.
