Heysa Farm: A Warm Retreat in the Mountains
In June 2024, Heysa Farm celebrated its grand opening in Mingli Village, Wanrong Township. Perched at an elevation of approximately 600 meters, the farm is managed by Ms. Wu Xiang-Lan, whose exceptional community ties drew numerous local friends and officials to the event. Once a quiet and scarcely visited mountain area, Heysa Farm has brought new vibrancy and life to the region.
The Story of “Sister Wu”: From Midwife to Agricultural Advocate
Heysa is the Truku name of Wu Xiang-Lan, affectionately referred to by locals as “Sister Wu.” In her youth, Sister Wu worked as a midwife and restaurant owner. Her exceptional eloquence and dedication to service later led her to become an event host, eventually advancing from a local representative to a Commissioner of the Council of Indigenous Peoples. Her passionate service has earned her deep respect from her community, cementing her role as a pillar of the tribe.
The Transformation: From Betel Nut Plantation to Organic Farm
On the day of the interview, Sister Wu was busy harvesting passion fruit and loofahs, demonstrating her close connection to the daily life of the farm. She shared with a smile, “I grew up following my mother to the mountains to farm—how could I not be familiar with this?”
After inheriting her mother’s land, she was determined to transform the betel nut plantation into an organic farm. Today, Heysa Farm spans one hectare and is home to a variety of fruit trees, including mangoes, golden fruits, peaches, passion fruit, papayas, sapodillas, and bitter tea trees.
With a breathtaking view, the farm’s structures are designed to maximize ventilation and natural light, seamlessly blending with the surrounding mountain environment.
In the open and serene environment, sipping a cup of coffee or enjoying some tea offers a tranquil feeling of being embraced by the mountains and forests.
Signature Dishes and the Honesty Store
At Heysa Farm, you can savor a variety of handmade snacks and meals, such as apple pie, lemon tart, pasta, and unique Truku-style cuisine. Among Sister Wu’s specialties are her creative taro cakes and banana rice, offering a delightful culinary experience. However, since the farm is currently run by just one person, reservations are required before visiting.
Outside the farm lies the Honesty Store, a quaint spot where local farmers sell fresh produce. Visitors can freely pick their desired items and leave payment in the honesty box. This small shed not only provides a direct sales platform for neighboring farmers but also showcases the achievements of the region’s friendly agricultural practices.
The naturally brewed fruit juices, crafted with Sister Wu’s secret recipes, offer a refreshing and pure taste you simply can’t miss!
Promoting Organic Agriculture: Sister Wu’s Vision for Sustainability
Sister Wu has long been dedicated to advancing organic farming in the region. A few years ago, Tzu Chi University invited her to assist in promoting organic cultivation. She led local farmers in training programs and helped establish a grain production and marketing team within the township. Despite challenges such as an aging population and limited resources, she continues to champion organic farming, bringing hope for transformation to the local agricultural industry.
A Place That Brings People Together
Heysa Farm is more than just a place for delicious food—it’s a sanctuary filled with stories, warmth, and connection. Here, visitors can not only savor dishes made from local ingredients but also experience Sister Wu’s rich life stories and her deep passion for the land.
Whether you’re seeking a moment of tranquility or an opportunity to explore the culture of local agriculture, Heysa Farm is undoubtedly a destination worth visiting.
In the afternoons, Sister Wu often brings out a lounge chair for a nap, enjoying the cool, refreshing environment provided by nature. Her little dog accompanies her, lounging comfortably by her side.
